New Voices in Science Fiction Contest Winners Announced
The Atlanta Science Fiction Society's New Voices in Science Fiction Contest for Grades 9 through 12 has come to a close, and the winners are:
ESSAY:
1st Place - "Thoughts on the Future of the City of Atlanta" by Dustin Burns, 10th grade, age 15, from Dacula High School
2nd Place - "If You Could Step Out of a Time Machine 100 Years in the Past" by Ayaan A Harper, from Mundy's Mill High School
3rd Place - "On the Interactions Between Extraterrestrials and Humans" by Joshua Job, 10th grade, age 14, from Dacula High School
POETRY:
1st Place - "The Jabushans and the Dairy Cows" by Mary Golden, 10th grade, age 15, from Dacula High School
2nd Place - "Remotely Close" by Darius Devlin, 9th grade, age 15, from Columbia High School
3rd Place - "My Brother" by Olga Petrenko, 10th grade, age 15, from Dacula High School
SHORT STORY:
1st Place - "The Silver Sentinel" by Daniel Fitzgerald, 11th grade, age 16, from Lassiter High
2nd Place - "Moon Boots" by Olivia Boyce, 10th grade, age 15, from Dacula High School
The first place prize in each category is a $40 Barnes & Noble Gift Certificate, along with other donated prizes of books and the like.
Each of the above winning poems, short stories, and essays will be published in the ASFS newsletter, "The Future Times" in the next few months as time and space allow.
I want to thank all the participants and teachers. We had a great time reading the works from the future voices of Science Fiction. ASFS will start the next contest in August or September. We look forward to seeing more great and interesting work from our Atlanta area students.
